Midcentry Futurism

One of the beautiful coincidences between the growth of a tree and type design is that growth happens sideways. This was new to me but seems obvious now.

Like a ballad that sways its melody to somber, illustrator Kaethe Butcher wavers a wistful melancholic carol we can all relate to.

Sulky and faint eyes, harboring smothered feelings, and unwittingly jogging towards heartache, Kaethe Butcher gives us a glimpse of her characters in their most honest and tender state. They are drawn in soft yet sensitive lines, as if confused or anxious, soft and fading lightly. Mild enough to be seen, but not as bold and strong as they seem. Their tangled hair and their bodies speaking in honesty, peeking into darkness and trying to spot a glimmer of hope. Kaethe Butcher’s incomplete yet distinguished and whispering lines, best illuminate our kept moods and our masked frailty.

Seemingly flashing us the grimmest though most disregarded part of our lives, the drawings don’t intend to focus on the things that hang over our heads, but instead, aim to reconcile us with them. The illustrations mirror facing our fears, worries, and uncertainties, and learning how to accept the tragedies and blunders as part of the ride.

As if a portion of our diaries we never want anyone to read, these illustrations of Kaethe Butcher acquaint us with our deepest woes. And at the same time, encourages our fragile skins and tender bodies, reintroducing us to the possible afterglow we may have never thought to exist.

When people look at my artworks I want to give them a reflection of their own emotions, of moments from the past or a wish for the future. I want the viewers to pause for a bit and embrace all these feelings and moments they may have forgotten while living their hectic lives and to find a piece of their own story in one of my lines.
