One of the beautiful coincidences between the growth of a tree and type design is that growth happens sideways. This was new to me but seems obvious now.

Her love for manga (Japanese comics) during her teenage years played a huge part in her journey to pursue her passion for art. As this was a fragment of her childhood years, the style of drawing in mangas inspired her inclination for tender and delicate lines. Illustrator Kaethe Butcher shares her own personal project that exhibits her own interpretation of Sailor Moon.

If you are not familiar, Sailor Moon is a manga that was first released in 1991 and has also been adapted as an anime tv series. In this particular collection, she intends to depict the characters in a different light. Honest, unmasked, and relishing in their bare skin. Solemnly beating the drum to confidence with their most cozy and comfortable angles, they celebrate their bravery and independence whilst cuddling their flaws and imperfections. She also hopes for us to get to know the characters and their personalities, providing a connection to the portraits that may lead us to find our inner Sailor Moon.

When people look at my artworks I want to give them a reflection of their own emotions, of moments from the past or a wish for the future. I want the viewers to pause for a bit and embrace all these feelings and moments they may have forgotten while living their hectic lives and to find a piece of their own story in one of my lines.
